plastic bottlesIn recent years, several scientific studies questioned the concentrations of a chemical called bisphenol A, which is present in many types of containers for daily use and was considered “safe” for human health.

Given this evidence one of the lead agencies in the area, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA, according to its acronym in English) United States Government convened an expert committee to evaluate the scientific rigor of published papers on the subject .

A study by a group of scientists from the School of Biochemistry and Biological Sciences at the Universidad Nacional del Litoral (UNL), Santa Fe, Argentina and the Tufts School of Medicine in Boston, has attracted the attention of U.S. authorities. (more…)

Artificial additives exacerbate hyperactivity in children

hyperactivity in childrenArtificial colors and additives commonly used in children’s food exacerbate hyperactivity in children, even those who do not have the disorder, according to an article published today in the medical journal The Lancet.

A group of scientists from the University of Southampton (southern England) studied the effects of additives on children’s behavior changes in a group of nearly 300 children, 153 of them in 3 years and another 144, 8 and 9.

Children were given in some cases two different drink mixes that include various additives, in others a placebo.

Among these substances contained the preservative sodium benzoate (E211), used in soft drinks as “Pepsi Max”, “Fanta” or “Sprite” and artificial coloring E110, E102, E122, E124, E129 and E104, present in many sweets and sweets consumed daily by British children. (more…)

Consumption of yerba mate retards cellular aging

yerba mateA study conducted by Argentine scientists found that yerba mate contains a high percentage of an antioxidant substance that retards cellular aging and prevents certain diseases, sources told Efe research.

The study was funded by the Regional Program of Assistance to the Sector herbalist and the National Institute of Yerba Mate (INYM) of Argentina, and led by Luis Brumovsky chemical engineer from the Universidad Nacional de Misiones.

This is a pioneering research as it is the first to be made with the mate priming infusion made with the mate and is consumed as tea.

28.1% of infected with AIDS in Guatemala is indigenous

28.1 percent of the 16,895 Guatemalans infected with AIDS is part of the Maya, Garifuna and Xinca, an official said.

The coordinator of the National AIDS Programme, Ministry of Public Health and Welfare, Mariel Castro, said in a meeting with reporters organized by indigenous organizations, that 27 percent of all patients with the deadly disease belongs to the Mayan people.

While 0.8 percent belongs to the Garifuna people settled in the Caribbean Guatemala and 0.3 percent Xinca in the east, said the official.

According to the source, about 58,000 people in Guatemala are infected with Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV), of which 16 895 have developed AIDS. (more…)

That is, at least, the effect was achieved on the metabolism of 16 male volunteers who lived a sedentary lifestyle, according to a study conducted by Professor James Timmons and researchers from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh which is published in “BMC Endocrine Disorders.”

childhoodChildhood trauma increases the risk of developing lung cancer and die prematurely from this cause in adulthood, according to research conducted by scientists from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta (USA) and published in “BMC Public Health.”

The team led by David Brown and Robert Anda, studied the impact they might have on the health of a child abuse – both emotional and physical or sexual abuse – domestic violence, separation from parents or growing up in a home with people with mental illness are drug addicts or in prison.

To do this, they collected information about these traumas of more than 17,000 people between 1995 and 1997. In parallel, followed by the medical developments of this sample to study the rates of lung cancer than were in 2005. (more…)

Child Trauma and stress associated with chronic fatigue syndrome

childholdPeople who have experienced trauma and abuse during childhood are more likely to develop chronic fatigue syndrome, according to a recent article in the journal Archives of General Psychiatry.

In addition, neuroendocrine dysfunction, ie abnormalities in the interaction of nervous system and endocrine system seems to be associated with childhood trauma in people with this syndrome, suggesting a biological pathway by which early experiences influence the vulnerability to disease in adulthood.
